Durability for Granite and MarbleNatural stone from Louis W. Mian is the perfect material for your kitchen or bathroom. There is no man made product that has the same colors, textures, or elegance than natural stone. Our tiles and slabs for countertops add a new dimension to any room of your home. Because of its susceptibility to stains, Louis W. Mian recommends that marble be used in bathrooms and foyers as opposed to kitchens. A kitchen countertop made of marble would require a great deal of maintenance on the part of the homeowner. Granite, however, is an ideal choice for kitchen countertops of all sizes. It is a virtually scratch resistant material; cutting food with knives directly on the surface is not a problem. Granite is also heat resistant to the point where a hot coffee pot or skillet could be placed on the surface without causing damage. You won't find a better combination of durability and natural beauty than Louis W. Mian granite. Limestone, generally speaking, is the most susceptible to staining and scratching. It is a very porous natural stone and should always be sealed with a recommended product. Slate, while relatively resistant to staining, is very soft and will scratch easily, especially with a honed (matte) finish. Louis W. Mian recommends the use of sealer on all types of natural stone. Keep in mind, however, that sealer will not necessarily prevent staining, but will make the stone less susceptible to staining.
